Helping You Find Contact Lenses
Your eyes are unique, so the one-size-fits-all approach is not something that works for contact lenses. At Central Optometry, we take the time to discuss your lifestyle and vision goals to provide personalized contact lens recommendations.
We recommend that all patients wearing or considering contact lenses undergo a comprehensive contact lens exam and fitting. Improperly fitted contact lenses can lead to discomfort and other eye issues. Book online to schedule your appointment today and get the right fit for your contact lenses.
How Contact Lenses Can Help
Contact lenses, like your prescription glasses, can correct refractive errors like:
- Myopia
- Hyperopia
- Astigmatism
- Presbyopia
During your contact lens exam, your doctor will review your lifestyle needs and contact lens preferences to determine appropriate contact lens recommendations. We also test your visual acuity to see how well you see letters and symbols from a distance.
Walking You Through the Contact Lens Process
Finding contact lenses for your eyes involves three steps: the exam, the fitting, and the trial period. Our team will walk you through the process and answer any questions or concerns you may have about your new lenses.
Before determining which brand and style of contact lenses meet your needs, we’ll examine your eyes and review your medical and ocular history. Then, we will assess your eyes for any conditions that may prevent you from wearing contact lenses or require you to wear specialty contact lenses.
During your exam, we will also address any questions or concerns you may have and determine your contact lens prescription, which is not the same as your glasses prescription.
We will measure your eyes once we have established that you are a suitable candidate for contact lenses. These measurements are used to determine which style of contact lens you require, as well as the power and curvature suited to your eyes.
To help us measure your eyes, we use a variety of tests and technology, including corneal topography.
Contact lenses come in various styles, shapes, and sizes. It’s essential to get the right match for your eyes since this keeps your eyes comfortable and healthy for clear, stable vision.
Once we have determined which contact lenses are suited for your eyes, we will provide you with a trial pair. The trial phase allows you to confirm that your new contact lenses are comfortable, give you clear vision, and meet your vision and lifestyle needs.
After a few days, if you are happy with your trial pair, we will provide you with a copy of your contact lens prescription and order a supply of contact lenses for you.
If your trial lenses aren’t quite right, we will adjust accordingly by trying other powers, styles, or brands until we find one that suits your needs.
Contact Lens Maintenance Is Key
Taking care of your contact lenses correctly is crucial for maintaining both the health of your eyes and your comfort. Based on the specific type of contact lenses you wear, your optometrist will provide you with tailored instructions.
However, one universal rule applies to all contact lens users: always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your lenses. This simple yet crucial step helps reduce the risk of bacteria exposure, thus helping to keep eye infections at bay.
Our team can help answer any questions you may have about caring for your contact lenses.
Our Specialty Contact Lenses
Contact lenses fall under 2 main categories: soft contact lenses and rigid gas permeable (RGP). These 2 categories include specialty contact lenses that can help address and correct your unique visual needs.
Multifocal contact lenses, like multifocal glasses, feature more than one prescription, allowing them to offer a gradient of vision correction in one lens. Multifocal contact lenses are typically prescribed to patients with presbyopia, an ocular condition that affects our near vision as we age.
Toric contact lenses are specialty contact lenses designed for patients with astigmatism. Toric lenses are available in both soft and rigid gas-permeable varieties.
Since toric lenses have different prescriptions along the horizontal and vertical axes of the lens, they must remain orientated correctly to provide clear vision. As such, toric lenses are weighted so they don’t rotate throughout the day.
Ortho-k, or orthokeratology, lenses are specialty rigid gas permeable contact lenses that are used to gently reshape your child’s corneas while they sleep. This temporarily corrects myopia, providing them with clear vision the next day without the use of contact lenses or glasses.
Ortho-k has been found to be particularly effective in children, controlling myopia progression and helping keep their prescription low.
Transitions contact lenses offer an innovative solution for dealing with harmful UV radiation. By combining photochromic additives with hydrogel technology, these contact lenses darken when exposed to sunlight or harmful blue light from screens to protect your eyes and help them adjust, ideal for patients who are sensitive to bright light.
