What Is AMD?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that generally develops due to ageing, genetics, or outside factors like smoking. It is one of the leading causes of blindness in adults over 55 and older.
AMD develops with no noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Over time, however, the disease will slowly damage your macula, the central part of your retina responsible for providing your central vision.
You may experience difficulties reading, driving, or even recognizing faces as it develops. In advanced stages, AMD can cause blindness.
There are different types of AMD to look out for.
Identifying the earliest stages of AMD can be challenging. Patients can often have normal vision through the subclinical stage of AMD.
Subclinical AMD is a subtle yet progressive process that results in impaired dark adaptation and sometimes difficulty with night vision. This stage takes place up to 3 years before your doctor can see physical drusen in your retina.
Dry AMD is the most common form of the disease. It occurs when small, yellowish deposits, called drusen, develop underneath your macula, slowly thinning it over time.
Some symptoms you may experience include:
- Visual distortions, such as straight lines bending
- Difficulty seeing in low light
- Words blurring when you read them
- Fading colours
- Needing more light when reading
Even though wet AMD occurs in only 10% of macular degeneration patients, it is responsible for causing 90% of all AMD-related blindness.
This disease occurs when delicate blood vessels begin to form underneath your macula and retina. Over time, these vessels can break and leak blood and other fluids, damaging your macula permanently.
Wet AMD can happen rapidly, making it a medical emergency. It can cause a range of sudden symptoms, including:
- Fading colours
- Glare from lights
- Distortion in your vision
- Dark spots in your central vision
How We Diagnose AMD
Our team at Central Optometry implements modern technology and treatments for our patients with AMD. This commitment to our patients has earned us the distinction of being an AMD Centre of Excellence.
Our technology for AMD testing includes optical coherence tomography and dark adaptation testing.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a specialized imaging technology that takes highly detailed images of your macula and retina. OCTs are similar to an ultrasound, but instead of using sound, OCTs use light to generate cross-sectional images of your retina.
This 3D image of your retina allows us to explore if your retinal layers are distorted and check for eye diseases like macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
AdaptDx Pro is the next generation of dark adaptation testing. This wearable device determines how well your eyes adapt to changing lighting conditions and is suitable to wear in any light thanks to its comfortable eyecups and hygienic comfort guards that block out any outside light.
With the help of our technicians and a unique built-in AI system, we can quickly detect signs of AMD before it is visible in the retina.
Treating AMD with Macumira
Macumira is a clinically proven treatment that offers hope to individuals suffering from dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). With its safe and noninvasive approach, Macumira has been designed to restore vision and improve the quality of life for those affected by this degenerative eye condition.
Macumira uses noninvasive eyelid surface neurostimulation to improve vision. The process involves microcurrent stimulation with a patented waveform delivered through a specialized system.
In a clinical trial involving 60 participants, 48% of patients in the treatment group showed an improvement of at least 10 letters on the EDTRS acuity chart, along with an average increase of 8.8 EDTRS letters and a 25% average increase in EDTRS acuity.
Importantly, these improvements were sustained throughout the duration of the trial, demonstrating the long-lasting effects of Macumira.
